IOWA SENIOR GAMES – 2023, PICKLEBALL

This is another record year for participation in this event.  The numbers have grown such that we will be considering and discussing soon, to extend the event to a 3-day Tournament or otherwise locating additional courts to effectively accommodate the increasing numbers.

This years’ event is no different than years past. Where brackets have limited participation (1 or 2 teams or players), brackets are combined in an attempt at getting all participants a good share of games played. Medal and qualification determinations are arrived at by ONLY using your play against those in your specific bracket for play. Additionally, medals are only given for your finish in your registered bracket. Players are not awarded additional medals based on the results/finish in the combined bracket.

Similar to many of our Iowa Senior Games events (as well as Iowa Summer and Iowa Winter Games), virtually all play will be a format of “1 game to 11 points, win by 1.” This includes any brackets split into pools, culminating in a “Championship Style Playoff” (these playoffs will also follow this format). The ONLY exception are the three or four brackets containing 3 teams (or 3 players in singles), where play may expand to consist of 2 games to 11 points, win by 1 point. Although these brackets may appear as though they could have been combined to allow players additional games, the combinations would likely have crossed more than 1 Division of included play, spanned 2 or more age brackets, or otherwise increased the resulting combined bracket beyond its effective limitations.

Please, to avoid confusion, as well as any sort of “disqualification,” do not play any other game formats other than those described here, or otherwise found upon your respective bracket sheet.

The “ONLY” start times for the day that we can be absolutely certain of are where the following Mixed Brackets will start sharply at 7:30 am (either Wednesday or Thursday):

WED, June 7th: Mixed 60-64, Div. 2 (12 teams, 6 courts)  and  Mixed 60-64, Div. 3 (6 teams, 3 courts)

THUR, June 8th: Mixed 70-74, Div. 2 & 3 (16 teams, 8 courts)  and  Mixed Division 1 (3 teams, 1 court)

The remaining Mixed brackets are scheduled to start by 9:00 am, either day respectively.  Courts are designed to be filled based on the number of courts opening and available as compared to the Men/Women Doubles bracket’s need (for courts). Simply put, some brackets may have delays. Other than assigning only 1 court to each and every bracket, there is virtually no way to get around this. Please do not second guess yourself, your partner, your opponents, or the organization of the event. Arrive accordingly to get yourself checked in, stay close, patiently if necessary, to avoid delays in your respective bracket as well as other brackets in your sub-event, and subsequent sub-events for the day.

We always follow the USA Pickleball rules as best possible. You are responsible for line calls. Service rules and service faults tend to be the most used (or “abused”) areas in pickleball play; services above the waist, paddle above the wrist (in serves), ball struck prior to finishing the score, drop serves that are not “drops” (tossed, thrown, propelled, etc.). Please play fair, please have fun.

Thank you.
